![]() The Fifth Element features lots of HDR-friendly hair. Very occasionally the addition of HDR can cause some small peak bright highlights - such as the edges of the engravings in the Egyptian wall at the start - to look too prominent. There’s grain, too, in the HD Blu-ray version - though the addition of HDR and wide colour gamut technologies have made it look slightly more prominent in this 4K release. It doesn’t appear, though, that this grain is caused by digital noise created by the 4K scan and/or any subsequent remastering of the image frames rather it’s simply the 4K nature of the remaster capturing grain in the film source. After the extremely pristine look of some 4K Blu-rays I’ve tested recently, for instance, the amount of noise in The Fifth Element’s ‘finish’ initially comes as quite a shock. In fact, a slightly yellow bias infiltrates many scenes, but it’s much more noticeable at the start than at other times through the film. The opening scenes in the Egyptian archaeology site exhibit a strikingly pushed yellow that doesn’t look at all natural at times. This is an approach Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures have pursued before, with varying degrees of success. The Fifth Element’s 4K Blu-ray picture has been derived from a 4K remaster of the film’s original 35mm print.
